I posted this to a forum I go to. Maybe one of my… few readers could be of some help:
After about 5 years of sharing a web hosting plan between myself and two friends, we are going to let the plan die. We are all going to different colleges in different areas now, and some of the sites hosted on our plan were killed/given away to new people to run them/etc.
I am in the process of looking for a new webhost that costs around/under $10-14/mo. I am planning on going in on the plan with a friend, so it needs enough space and bandwidth to support 2 people (he will be lighter than my light web use). If we end up with one of those “megaplans” that clearly oversell, we would probably provide some anime ddl’s or something for new releases (unlicensed only, of course).
I’m considering dreamhost since for $10/mo they give you an assload of space and features, and we have a friend who can get us a steep discount. The downside is that dreamhost has crazy high loadavg’s (I’m talking upwards of 100’s and even have heard of people in the 1000’s). Also, their SQL servers are on a separate box, and the pipe between them isn’t fat enough, so you get high query latency. The price and features are good, but i want my site to run at a reasonable speed.
Can anyone recommend a good host, or confirm/tell me what i know about dreamhost is wrong?
