This past week I purchased a Linksys WRT54GL to replace my dated Linksys BEFW11S4 router.  I purchased the GL rather than the G due to double the flash and ram (since linksys crippled the wrt54g at v5, they re-released the v4 as the GL).  My intent was to flash it with dd-wrt, a 3rd party linux based firmware for many different models of routers.

When the router came, I figured that I should run some speed tests to compare my speeds with my old router, the WRT54GL with Linksys factory firmware, and dd-wrt.  The results really are impressive.

 First, The old router:

I pay for 4MB/s down from my ISP and have complained to my friends numerous times about my slow speeds recieved.  This is actually HIGHER than normal.

The WRT54GL, stock firmware

As you can see, much much better speed than before.  I was blown away by the increase.  I had no idea that a new router could improve my speeds that much.

DD-WRT v23 SP2

As you can see, DD-WRT had the overall best results.  I am very pleased with dd-wrt, and highly recommend that anyone with a compatible router flash to it.  It really is worth it for the added speed, features, and configurability.  Watch this site for a possible tutorial on flashing your router.
